They haunt the sleeping strip mall Weeds in the cracks of the suburban dream Before the bell stops ringing They're out behind the school smoking She doesn't tell him she's a freshman He'd be a senior if he hadn't dropped out Mom warned Kim about boys like this Tommy was the kind she was talking about Cheap dope, cheap gropes, cheap jokes again They're gonna have fun if it ends up killing them Parking lot kids don't throw yourselves away What the hell are you wearing? Not in my house you don't But when her mom passes out again Kim's out the door and on her own Tommy told his manager to bite it Nobody treats him like a tool Man I need to talk to my cousin About how to get into trade school Orange lights and yellow lines Black asphalt on and on Any minute the cops'll be here To move us all along In the meantime flip the tape over Give me another hit of that Let's just cruise on forever Till the tank is empty and the tires are flat
2.
He's a public menace He loves to make them crawl He makes them feel stupid He's a threat to them all He's the bad news of the world They've all heard the stories But they don't believe They wear it on their sleeves So easy to deceive Bad news of the world Why, why, why, why, why? I don't understand why She's weak and unsteady He'll give her a shove And when she jumps the hoop She'll hope it's love Bad news of the world I wish all the girls Could learn his name He'll keep on calling Stay away just the same Bad news of the world He's a public menace But they don't believe They thought life was OK Until they received The bad news of the world If you see him on the street Better cross it girl He's the bad news of the world
3.
I'm walking down a busy street, Dead languages in my ears All the voices of yesterday Ringing down through the years With sweat and red brick They built this town Now you see those red bricks Laying on the ground We're so afraid of tomorrow We destroy our faded yesterdays Are we gonna build a future Or just another Walgreens? Hey don't forget, hey don't forget, hey don't forget St. Louis don't forget All the kids are jumping like rats From this stinking sinking ship Escaping from a sentence in the subdivisions Where it's illegal to be hip They think there's a life out there Somewhere for them to find Do they ever wonder about The life they leave behind? You go out into the world to take it over What's to stop the world from taking over you? You run and you run and what you're running from Is always over your shoulder Streetlights flash in time To the midday traffic beat White girls with black girl hair Push strollers down the street Brick layers, punks, refugees From here you can see it all This life I love won't fit Inside a shopping mall See the concrete flowers from the days when roses rose Get a good look before they get bulldozed Well you can always knock us down But you'll never pave us over
4.
The hands on the clock are moving too slowly for you Is this crippling life the best we can do? You're a piece of equipment, you're rolling stock Force your fingers into a fist and punch the clock Punch the clock... We're tired of living our lives for someone else Yanked down, messed around, put back on the shelf We say "no" to boredom, frustration and shame Nothing's gonna stop us now that we know our name What's our name? We're clockwatchers And we're on the march Clockwatchers And it's up to us So tell me now, wage slave, what's it gonna be? Do you want a quiet life or do you wanna make history? They think you're happy, they think you're an idiot Keep you so frustrated that you start believing it Don't believe it You're not an idiot Nobody's gonna give us anything Our chains to lose, a world to win
5.
I took a little vacation I took it out on I took it out on you And if you think this is frustration There's nothing I can do I think it's all on you What kind of friend are you To do the things you do? Does Laura have to know? Just a minor indiscretion It wasn't much to It wasn't much to see Now you think you need some protection Now what is that to me? I can't even see What kind of friend are you To do the things you do? I took a little vacation I took it out on I took it out on you And if you think this is frustration There's nothing I can do As what they say is true: It isn't what you do... It's what you get done to

Look Around 03:38
I guess it's not much on its face A red brick, redneck, anonymous place A dim memory of something more Broken streets wonder what for When I look around me now Passed a tired man in the street Lines on his face spelled "Am I obsolete?" I'm not ashamed to say it hurts That this decay is all that we are worth Our muscles built this city here Our reward is a future full of fear How long will this lion sleep? You chosen few better pray your souls to keep These were the streets I grew up on Now they've got vacant lots and payday loans I can't believe the things I see When I look at this place l love Is there anywhere you won't shit? ls there anywhere safe from you? We're gonna take it all back someday Your private street won't protect you
7.
Father's Day 03:18
No bright lights for me tonight No ashtray on the bar You won't find me hanging out Where the beautiful people are Tonight l'm known as Daddy But l'll never be a star I never thought it could be Until the day it happened to me She's so young, I feel so old What kind of Dad am I? All the punk kids stare and wonder Who's that weird old guy? They don't see me around much And they don't wonder why When you're staying out till three Don't feel sorry for me Oh please give me strength Am I big enough to stand Between her and the big bad world Oh baby I never planned But somehow she still trusts me Every time she takes me hand How long will it take Before I stop feeling like a fake No bright lights for me tonight No ashtray on the bar l'm reading bedtime stories Where the wild things are This daughter needs a Daddy So who needs to be a star? I'm boring you with this story But my lite is more than history
8.
I saw a cloud shaped like a mushroom I saw St. Louis in flames I pledged allegiance to Grandpa Reagan Would you like to play a game? Would it be like The Day After? Or would it be like Thunderdome? Would the Russians kill my family? Or would they leave us alone? Countdown here they come (5-4-3-2-1) Atomic nightmare bombs How many little boys and girls Woke up covered in sweat? How many kids afraid of the world? I'm still not over it yet I woke up to a brand new nightmare The World Trade Center was gone Every night I have trouble sleeping But these nightmares go on and on
9.
Turn to Me 03:25
We loosened up and got pretty tight But for every toxic Saturday night There's a Sunday morning When the bill comes due You had your last drop of hangover cure I don't mind running to the store You turn to me I'll turn to you I feel so shaky and crumbled inside But l'm a superhero when we're side by side You turn to me, I'll turn to you A few good records and a little good luck A good friend to loan a couple of bucks I want the world But that's all I really need This town holds a lot of enemies Hostile eyes down every street But the word is "revolution" And I'll always believe Two, ten, a hundred, a million like us Save me a seat at the back of the bus
10.
You can see them at a mall near you Careful you don't become one too Overstimulated on empty calories I should've said "no" but I just said "please" That's when I knew for sure...I was Overweight and starving I don't get enough of what I need Overweight and starving But I get too much of everything else Overweight and starving USA Today and polysorbate-80 That's allI need to sate me I eat factoids like potato chips Now my brain is as flabby as my hips Overloaded, blocked & bloated Undernourished, sugarcoated Please, nobody help me I don't need help You can see me at a mall near you Sucking down hyper-caffeinated goo My reality is reality TV I should've said "no" but I just said "please"
11.
Tucker and pout, make like to go it alone You can't even figure out how much money you own Dollars for Deutschmarks and pinball games But you end up with more of the same 1, 2, 3, 4, it happens every day And it's easy for you to say I don't like it when you treat me this way It's easy for you to say Hometown memories we laid to rest Singing songs of the mild, mild midwest I've got your sense of quality, you've got my sense of style For a long, long, lonely while So shut up 1, 2, 3, 4, it happens every day And it's easy for you to say Maybe dead I'd be better off, Red like Sergei Fedorov It's easy for you to say I get so shaky when I see you're so sure Caught up in new love and old literature Fresh distractions are easy to find And old friends drift apart all of the time
12.
I see by the clock above the bar Now its time to go I see by the clock above the bar Where are we going to go? You ask yourself if you've got Something better to do You don't want to hear the answer But you can't deny it's true You're no good tor me I don't like you anyway This isn't how I wanted to spend Another Saturday Now it's just you and your cigarettes Burning to make the scene But you know your time would be Better spent at the pinball machine She's no good for me I don't like her anyway I didn't want to drink Another weekend away Outside, people are living As you watch the girls drift out One look into your desperate eyes You're the one they can do without I'm no good, you say You don't like me anyway This isn't how I wanted to spend Another Saturday Hey!

They got bombs to drop They got money to make We learn how to give They learn how to take They want to feed us strip malls They got us tuning in Who wants to be a millionaire? Who's gonna get kicked in? Hey, hey, hey, do as they say Not as they do Nothing comes for free in the free market Capitalism hates you They got unions to break They got pastures to pave We pretend we're masters But we know we're slaves I love commercials I love my car Are we really as stupid As they tell us we are? Hey, hey, hey, do as they say Not as they do Nothing comes for free in the free market Capitalism hates you Hey, hey, hey, do as they say Not as they do Nothing comes for free in the free market Capitalism hates you

about

Workers of the world, relax! Capitalism hates you and wants to make you miserable and stupid... don't give it the satisfaction!

DIGNITY :: SOLIDARITY :: SELF-RESPECT

"A catchy collection of power-pop anthems, the disc combines the band's trademark political insight (Jason Toon, the singer and principal songwriter, was the Green Party candidate for state representative [in 2000]) with frenetic hooligan chants and punchy power chords. Like the Squares' "Oh Girlie Girl!" EP, Wave recalls the early Jam mixed with a bit of early Clash. With lyrics about urban sprawl, unfulfilling day jobs, vacant lots, nuclear war, junk food and paternal anxieties, the songs can get a little preachy at times, but usually they're smart and right on the money."
—René Spencer Saller, The Riverfront Times, 12/12/2001

Included here as a bonus track is "Capitalism Hates You". Recorded during the Working for Minimum Wave sessions, it was originally released on a novelty business-card-sized CD, packaged with a Red Squares trading card, and handed out at the album release party.

about

The Red Squares St. Louis, Missouri

Past their punk years, not quite mods, The Red Squares believe in the power of the power chord, in the militance of melody, in the righteousness of rhythm.

They play catchy populist rock n' roll and they want to change the world. They are unashamedly geeky, with a wide romantic streak and an unwillingness to talk down to people.

Modern pop action!
This is tomorrow!
